A novel aggregation induced emission (AIE) active anthracene based dihydroquinazolinone derivative (probe 1) has been synthesized and characterized by means of spectroscopic methods. The photophysical properties of this probe have been investigated in solvents of different polarity display that fluorescence states are of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) character. Probe 1 show clear AIE behavior in water/THF mixture on reaching water fraction 95%. The AIE behavior of probe 1 have been exploited for the detection of metal ions in aqueous solution which reveals high selectivity and sensitivity towards Cu2+ ions by colorimetrically and function as a chemosensor in a remarkable turn-off fluorescence manner. Further, the experimental results were investigated by computational means by optimizing the ground state geometries of probe 1 and probe 1-Cu complex using density functional theory (DFT) at B3LYP/6-31G** and B3LYP/6-31G**(LANL2DZ) levels of theory. Intra-molecular charge transfer was observed in probe 1 while ligand to metal charge transfer (LMCT) for probe 1-Cu complex.

In this study, two different types of hybrid porous organic polymers (POPs), polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane tetraphenylpyrazine (POSS-TPP) and tetraphenylethene (POSS-TPE), were successfully synthesized through the Friedel-Crafts polymerization of tetraphenylpyrazine (TPP) and tetraphenylethene (TPE), respectively, with octavinylsilsesquioxane (OVS) as node building blocks, in the presence of anhydrous FeCl3 as a catalyst and 1,2-dichloroethane at 60 degrees C. Based on N-2 adsorption and thermogravimetric analyses, the resulting hybrid porous materials displayed high surface areas (270 m(2)/g for POSS-TPP and 741 m(2)/g for POSS-TPE) and outstanding thermal stabilities. Furthermore, as-prepared POSS-TPP exhibited a high carbon dioxide capacity (1.63 mmol/g at 298 K and 2.88 mmol/g at 273 K) with an excellent high adsorption capacity for iodine, reaching up to 363 mg/g, compared with the POSS-TPE (309 mg/g).

A facile and highly efficient one-pot synthesis of 2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-ones derivatives has been developed by the condensation of anthranilamide with aldehydes using sulfonic acid functionalized l-Proline@Fe3O4 nanoparticles as a catalyst. The advantages of this protocol are easy recovery and reusability of the catalyst besides simple work-up procedure and short reaction time. In addition, the anthelmintic activities of some selective compounds were investigated and it was found that 2-phenyl-2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-one exhibited profound anthelmintic activity against two helminth models. Mango seed kernel is a by-product which is usually discarded. However, it has been confirmed in this study that seed kernel exhibits more phenolic compounds with bioactive properties than edible fraction of mango. The influence of factors such as cultivar and maturation degree on the phenolic composition has been studied to evaluate nutraceutical value. The comprehensive analysis of phenolic composition by HPLC-DAD-Q-ToF-MS seed kernel from different cultivars (‘Keth’, ‘Kent’and ‘Osteen’) at five maturation stages was conducted. Results evidenced that `Keitt’ samples exhibited higher quantities of iriflophenone glucoside, maclurin C-glucoside, maclurin digalloyl glucoside, mangiferin, 5-galloyl quinic acid and trigalloyl glucose at the first three ripening stages. However, seed kernel from `Osteen’ variety showed higher amounts of hexa- and hepta-gallotannins whose concentrations diminished over the maturation course. Therefore, cultivar and maturation stage factors should be take into account due to their influence on the phenolic composition and subsequently on the nutraceutical value.

Purification of recombinant proteins is often a challenging matter because high purity and high recovery are desired. If the expressed recombinant protein is also in a complex matrix, such as from the silkworm expression system, purification becomes more challenging. Even if purification from the silkworm expression system is troublesome, it benefits from a high capacity for the production of recombinant proteins. In this study, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were investigated as a suitable tool for the purification of proteins from the complex matrix of the silkworm fat body. The MNPs were modified with nickel so that they have an affinity for His-tagged proteins, as the MNP purification protocol itself does not need special equipment except for a magnet. Among the three different kinds of investigated MNPs, MNPs with sizes of 100 nm to 200 nm and approximately 20 nm-thick nickel shells were the most suitable for our purpose. With them, the total protein amount was reduced by up to at least approximately 77.7%, with a protein recovery of around 50.8% from the silkworm fat body. The minimum binding capacity was estimated to be 83.3 mu g protein/mg MNP. Therefore, these MNPs are a promising tool as a purification pretreatment of complex sample matrices.

A series of pendant anthracene-functionalized ethylene/propylene copolymer rubbers (EPRs) with UV-light response and self-healing properties are prepared in this work. The reversible crosslinked networks are achieved based on the highly reversible nature of [4 + 4] cycloaddition of anthracene derivatives. The reversible crosslinking process is characterized by UV-vis spectrophotometer, which gives a high conversion yield of approximate to 90% as well as the reversibility of approximate to 70%. This reversible reaction is successfully applied to the self-healing of EPR material. The healing efficiency is evaluated quantitatively by tensile test measurement. In terms of stress at break, the healing efficiency of crosslinked EPR with anthracene content of 5.7 mol% can reach 82.9%. The anthracene-functionalized EPR might have a potential prospect of application in self-healing field.

Benzophenones are widely used as organic UV filters in many personal care products, especially sunscreen, to protect humans from UV radiation. The increasing use of benzophenone class UV filters has raised concerns about the potential effects on the aquatic environment. These organic UV filters are designed to absorb UV light. However, to date, studies have not considered the potential of UV light to potentiate the toxicity of benzophenones in aquatic organisms. In this study using zebrafish embryos, we assessed the median lethal concentration (LC50) and sub-lethal effects of benzophenone and oxybenzone either under natural levels of UV light or under laboratory light conditions. The LC50 value in zebrafish embryos under both light conditions of oxybenzone was lower when compared to benzophenone. Interestingly, UV light significantly decreased the LC50 values (increased toxicity) of both benzophenone and oxybenzone. The presence of UV light induced a significant increase in hydroxyl radical formation and this was reflected in both increased SOD activity and lipid peroxidation in oxybenzone treated groups. Exposure to either benzophenone or oxybenzone also delayed hatching between 60 and 96 hpf when comparing to the control group while UV exposure further delayed hatching only in oxybenzone-exposed embryos. The results demonstrate the importance of involving UV light in toxicity testing for UV filters and provide much-need information on the UV-induced toxicity of benzophenone and oxybenzone under ecologically realistic conditions.

A series of N-benzoylanthranilamide derivatives have been synthesized with the substitution of competitive HB acceptors and investigated by NMR spectroscopy and single crystal XRD. The interesting rivalry for HB acceptance between (sic)C= and X (F or OMe) is observed in the investigated molecules which leads to an unusual increase in the electron density at the site of one of the NH protons, reflecting in the high field resonance in the H-1 NMR spectrum. The NMR experimental findings and single crystal XRD are further reinforced by the DFT studies.
