Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are difficult substrates for hydrogenation because of the thermodynamic stability caused by aromaticity. We report here the first chromium- and cobalt-catalyzed, regiocontrolled hydrogenation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons at ambient temperature. These reactions were promoted by low-cost chromium or cobalt salts combined with diimino/carbene ligand and methylmagnesium bromide and are characterized by high regioselectivity and expanded substrate scope that includes tetracene, tetraphene, pentacene, and perylene, which have rarely been reduced. The approach provides a cost-effective catalytic protocol for hydrogenation, is scalable, and can be utilized in the synthesis of tetrabromo- and carboxyl-substituted motifs through functionalization of the hydrogenation product. The systematic theoretical mechanistic modelings suggest that low-valent Cr and Co monohydride species, most likely from zerovalent transition metals, are capable of mediating these hydrogenations of fused PAHs.

The reaction of aromatic aldehydes with malononitrile, ethyl or butyl cyanoacetate and acetylacetone in the presence of NaOH under mild conditions (EtOH, 25 degrees C) led to the formation of new series of (1S,5R,6R,9R)/(1R,5S,6S,9S)-2-amino-6,9-diaryl-7-acetyl-8-methyl-4-oxo-5-cyano-3-azabicyclo[3.3.1]nona-2,7-diene-1-carboxylic acids esters. A plausible mechanism of the cascade reaction was proposed.

In the present work, sulfonated highly ordered mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (ompg-C3N4/SO3H) was synthesized successfully and employed as an efficient and reusable heterogeneous solid acid catalyst for the rapid and one-pot synthesis of 2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-ones via the condensation of anthranilamide with aldehydes or ketones in good to excellent yields. The organocatalyst was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area, and thermal gravimetric and differential thermal analysis. The substantial advantages of this procedure involve short reaction times, high catalytic activity, easy workup, high purity of the products, and easy recovery and reusability of the catalyst.

We report herein an efficient method to synthesize triptycenes by the reaction of benzynes and anthranoxides, which are electron-rich and readily prepared from the corresponding anthrones. Using this method, 1,9-syn-substituted triptycenes were regioselectively obtained employing 3-methoxybenzynes. This method was also applied to synthesize pentiptycenes. A DFT study revealed that the cycloaddition of lithium anthranoxide and benzyne proceeds stepwise.

Homogeneous cationic gold(i) catalysis emerged as a preferred avenue for the activation of alkenes and alkynes towards reactions with weak nucleophiles, especially in cyclization reactions. Here we report an intramolecular carboalkoxylation reaction of electron-rich benzyl ethers of 2-ethynylaryl phenols catalysed by a digold(i)-NHC complex. The reaction proceeds efficiently with low catalyst loading and the resulting 2,3-disubstituted benzofurans form in moderate to good yields. Based on the results of a cross-over experiment, spectroscopic data, and DFT calculations, we propose a mechanism that accounts for the observed chemo- and regioselectivity.

A facile and green one-pot synthesis of 2,3-dihydroquinazolinones, using microwave irradiation, has been developed. Dihydroquinazolinones were synthesized from 2-aminobenzamide derivatives and various aldehydes in aqueous solution under base and catalyst free reaction conditions. The desired products, from aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes substrates, were obtained in 5 minutes with up to 99 % isolated yields.

An efficient approach has been developed for the construction of quinazolin-4(3H)-ones by the selective anodic dehydrogenative oxidation/cyclization of benzylic chlorides and 2-aminobenzamides. The method features acceptor-free and metal-free dehydrogenation of amines to imines; a subsequent intermolecular addition provides the products in moderate to good yields.

Visual detection of p-toluenesulfonic acid (pTSA) is very important due to its health-harmful effects, but remains less investigated. In this study, a TGM (Triethylene Glycol Monomethyl ether) derived calix [4] carbazole was found to be able to selectively encapsulate pTSA by its cone conformation, thus specifically detecting it visually. The number of documented dengue cases has increased dramatically in recent years due to transmission through theAedes aegyptimosquito bite. Vector control remains the most effective measure to protect against this and other arboviral diseases including Zika, chikungunya and (urban) yellow fever, with an established vaccine only available for yellow fever. Although the quinone class shows potential as leading compounds for larvicide development, limited information restricts the development of optimized structures and/or formulations. Thus, in this contribution we investigated the larvicidal and pupicidal activity of three quinone compounds isolated from aConnarus suberosusroot wood ethyl acetate extract together with 28 quinones from other sources. Eight quinones demonstrated larvicidal activity, of which tectoquinone (4) proved to be the most active (LC(50)1.1 mu g/mL). The essential residual effect parameter of four of these quinones was evaluated in laboratory trials, with tectoquinone (4) and 2-ethylanthraquinone (7) presenting the most prolonged activity. In small-scale field residual tests, tectoquinone (4) caused 100% larvae mortality over 5 days, supporting its selection for formulation trials to develop a prototype larvicide to controlAe. aegypti.

The oxidation of a series of alkylaromatic compounds with H2O2 catalyzed by an imine-based non-heme iron complex prepared in situ by reaction of 2-picolylaldehyde, 2-picolylamine, and Fe(OTf)(2) in a 2 : 2 : 1 ratio leads to a marked chemoselectivity for aromatic ring hydroxylation over side-chain oxidation. This selectivity is herein investigated in detail. Side-chain/ring oxygenated product ratio was found to increase upon decreasing the bond dissociation energy (BDE) of the benzylic C-H bond in line with expectation. Evidence for competitive reactions leading either to aromatic hydroxylation via electrophilic aromatic substitution or side-chain oxidation via benzylic hydrogen atom abstraction, promoted by a metal-based oxidant, has been provided by kinetic isotope effect analysis.
