CoFe2O4@SiO2-CPTES-Guanidine-Cu(II) magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized and used as a new, inexpensive and efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the synthesis of polyhydroquinolines and 2,3-dihydroquinazoline-4(1H)-ones and for the oxidation of sulfides. The structure of this nanocatalyst was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Simple preparation, high catalytic activity, simple operation, high yields, use of green solvents, easy magnetic separation and reusability of the catalyst are some of the advantages of this protocol.

The thermochemical network of 91 isodesmic and other balanced reactions was used to adjust simultaneously the enthalpies of formation of 14 urea compounds. The experimental enthalpies of formation of these compounds were treated as unknowns in the least-squares minimization of deviations between the theoretically predicted enthalpies of reaction and experimental values. A result of a least-squares fit confirms the accuracy of experimental enthalpies of formation of 8 ureas, whereas the experimental measurements for 6 urea compounds require re-examination. The gas-phase standard enthalpies of formation of 8 ureas were used as a consistent basis to obtain values for other 15 ureas through isodesmic reactions. In vivo animal bioassays are increasingly being supplemented with in vitro assays to serve as the new standard for chemical toxicity tests. Despite this shift, investigators face challenges related to increased reliance on in vitro data. The aim of this study was to deploy a streamlined method to assess the ability of in vitro data to predict similar results as in vivo data by correlating chemical toxicity rankings obtained using Benchmark Doses and Benchmark Dose Lower Limits (BMD(L)s) derived from in vivo and in vitro assays. In vitro and in vivo assay characteristics were assessed for their impact on the predictive ability of in vitro data. Minimum best-fit BMD(L)s were calculated for chemicals using Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Benchmark Dose Software (BMDS). Forty-one chemicals met the inclusion criteria of this study. Relative chemical toxicity rankings were assessed through Kappa statistics, Pearson correlations, and/or Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regressions. Results illustrated likely ability of in vitro data to predict similar results as short-term in vivo data. Further, rankings derived from in vitro cytotoxicity assays, unlike stress response assays, significantly correlated with rankings derived from short-term in vivo assays. These results support the use of in vitro data as a prioritization tool within toxicity testing.

BackgroundWith the increasing demand for vegetative oil and the approach of peak seed oil production, it is important to develop new oil production platforms from non-seed tissues. Castor bean (Ricinus communis) is one of the crops for vegetable oil for industrial applications with yield around 1.4 ton oil per hectare produced in seed. The castor caruncle is a non-seed tissue attached to seed.ResultsCaruncle accumulates up to 40% oil by weight in the form of triacylglycerol (TAG), with a highly contrasting fatty acid composition when compared to the seed oil. Biochemical analysis indicated that the caruncle synthesizes TAGs independent of the seed. Such non-seed tissue has provided an excellent resource for understanding the mechanism of oil accumulation in tissues other than seeds. Transcriptome analysis revealed the key members of gene families involved in fatty acid synthesis and TAG assembly in the caruncle. A transient expression assay of these selected genes resulted in a 20-fold increased TAG accumulation in leaves.ConclusionsCastor caruncle utilizes an independent system to synthesize TAGs. Results provide the possibility of exploiting caruncle gene set to engineer oil production in non-seed tissues or microbes.

The present study describes an AuPPh3Cl/AgSbF6-catalyzed cascade reaction between amine nucleophiles and alkynoic acids in water. This process proceeds in high step economy with water as the sole coproduct, and leads to the generation of two rings, together with the formation of three new bonds in a single operation. This green cascade process exhibits valuable features such as low catalyst loading, good to excellent yields, high efficiency in bond formation, excellent selectivity, great tolerance of functional groups, and extraordinarily broad substrate scope. In addition, this is the first example of the generation of an indole/thiophene/pyrrole/pyridine/naphthalene/benzene-fused N-heterocycle library through gold catalysis in water from readily available materials. Notably, the discovery of antibacterial molecules from this library demonstrates its high quality and potential for the identification of active pharmaceutical ingredients.

A cobalt-catalyzed method for the C(sp(2))-C(sp(3)) Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling of aryl boronic esters and alkyl bromides is described. Cobalt-ligand combinations were assayed with high-throughput experimentation, and cobalt(II) sources with trans-N,N’-dimethylcyclohexane-1,2-diamine (DMCyDA, L-1) produced optimal yield and selectivity.
