Biological fouling, also called biofouling, is the undesirable formation of organisms on a surface immersed in water. When the exterior surface of an object such as a vessel is submerged in seawater for a prolonged period, micro and macro organisms usually accumulate on the surface. Biofilms are a set of microorganisms attached to a surface through exopolymers they produce, also known as extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). EPS are a mixture of polymers produced by microorganisms such as bacteria in the presence of biomass. EPS are mainly made up of carbohydrates and proteins, but in smaller quantities, they also contain lipids, nucleic acids, and humic substances. Proteins and carbohydrates found in eps can be quantified by using biochemical methods. The Modified Lowry method, BCA method, and Bradford methods are the common biochemical methods used to quantify protein. Anthrone-sulphuric acid and phenol-sulphuric acid are most common methods used to quantify carbohydrate. The Lowry method was determined to be the best method to quantify protein because it has high precision, low error and low limit of detection. Also, it is highly sensitive and reproducible. The anthrone method was determined to be the best method to quantify carbohydrate because it has high precision, low error, low LOQ. Results were confirmed by testing on substrates deployed in the marine environment to allow establishment of a natural biofilm for study.

Although the synthesis of novel N-heterocyclic molecules is extremely demanding as well as challenging, the involvement of toxic solvents often triggers environmental safety concerns, resulting in process-engineering challenges. Herein, we have demonstrated a rapid, environmentally benign and energy efficient scalable method for the synthesis of 2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-one by grinding in a mortar pestle as well as mechanochemically via ball milling using p-TSA catalyst. The ability to accomplish the reaction in the absence of solvent via grinding or milling with p-TSA catalyst, with an immediate reduction in the cost and operational procedures, features the significant advantages of this protocol. The scalability and significance of the operational parameters during mechanochemical milling in the tubular ball mill were also demonstrated. Excellent yield in short duration, large substrate scope, product scalability, and easy recoverability are the prime features of this mechanochemical solvent-free protocol for the synthesis of 2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-one. The study also demonstrated the significant role of ball diameter to improve the efficiency of the milling operation in this mechanochemical synthesis.

Quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) modelling has been used in many scientific fields. This approach has been extensively applied in environmental research to predict physicochemical properties of compounds with potential environmental impact. The soil sorption coefficient is an important parameter for the evaluation of environmental risks, and it helps to determine the final fate of substances in the environment. In the last few years, different QSPR models have been developed for the determination of the sorption coefficient. In this study, several QSPR models were generated and evaluated for the prediction of log K-oc from the relationship with log P. These models were obtained from an extensive and diverse training set (n = 639) and from subsets of this initial set (i.e. halves, fourths and eighths). The aim of this study was to investigate whether the size of the training set affects the statistical quality of the obtained models. Furthermore, statistical equivalence was verified between the models obtained from smaller sets and the model obtained from the total training set. The results confirmed the equivalence between the models, thus indicating the possibility of using smaller training sets without compromising the statistical quality and predictive capability, as long as most chemical classes in the test set are represented in the training set.

The polysaccharide of yam was extracted by hot water method and purified by column chromatography. The physicochemical properties of Chinese yam polysaccharide were analyzed by UV, IR, GPC, 1D-NMR and 2D-NMR spectra. The results showed that Chinese yam polysaccharide had alpha-D-Gluc-(1 -> 4) glycoside bond, and the C2 hydroxyl group was replaced by ethoxyl group. The average molecular weight was determined to be 7.28 x 104. It showed that The scavenging effect of yam polysaccharide on hydroxyl radicals was similar to VC. The sulfated polysaccharide (S-P), phosphorylated polysaccharide (P-P), carboxymethylated polysaccharide (C-P) and acetylated polysaccharide (A-P) were identified by IR and NMR. The results showed that P and its derivatives showed good antioxidant activity. Especially, their scavenging ability to hydroxyl radicals reached the level of VC. This laid a theoretical foundation for the development of yam polysaccharide-related foods.

A novel oxidative esterification of 1-arylprop-2-en-1-ols with toluene derivatives catalyzed by tetrabutylammonium iodide (TBAI) is reported. The optimization of the reaction conditions illustrates that each of experiment parameters including the catalyst, solvent, and oxidant is significant for present oxidative functionalization. 4-Imidazol-1-yl-butane-1-sulfonic acid (ImBu-SO3H) has been successfully synthetized and fully characterized by FT-IR and high-resolution NMR spectroscopy (H-1, C-13). The plausible alternative structures of ImBu-SO3H were discussed on the basis of its NMR data. The ionic liquid showed interesting dual solvent-catalyst property, which was studied experimentally for the acetylation of a variety of functionalized alcohols, phenols, thiols, amines and a-tocopherol (a-CTP) as the most active form of vitamin E with acetic anhydride and which provided good yields within a short reaction time. ImBu-SO3H was successfully recycled by product extraction with an average recovered yield of 82% for 5 subsequent runs. Facile green synthesis of BiOCl-TiO2 was done using combustion technique by Ixora coccinea leaf extract as fuel source. The said material was characterized using XRD, SEM, EDX, HRTEM, SAED, FTIR, and UV-DRS. The particle size was found to be approximately 60 nm and a crystallite size of 0.3 nm from TEM. The photocatalytic activity of the material was found out using photoluminescence studies, dye degradation and photocatalytic organic conversion. The material showed excellent dye degradation capacity for methylene blue with 80% of the dye degraded under 3 hrs. The stabilisation of electron-hole pair by the heterostructure gave it the ability to perform easy degradation. The degradation kinetics have also been studied. It also showed an excellent organic conversion property with formylation yield reaching up to 96% and total conversion of the reactant molecule. The material is a potent photocatalyst due to its great efficiency and can have a remarkable role in the synthesis of important organic molecules and detoxification of environment.Graphical AbstractThe heterostructure catalyses the conversion of amine to amides and mineralizes methylene blue under visible light condition.

An efficient and convenient strategy for the synthesis of diversely substituted quinazolinones from o-carbamoyl/cyano aniline and aryl iodides using oxalic acid as a CO source under polystyrene supported palladium (Pd@PS) nanoparticles (NPs) catalyzed conditions has been developed.
