WRKY transcription factors participate in the salt stress responses of various plant species, but the underlying functional mechanisms are not well understood, particularly in grape. In this study, the role of VvWRKY13 in the salt stress response was characterized and the underlying physiological and molecular mechanisms were explored. The results show that VvWRKY13 expression was induced by salt stress, and the VvWRKY13 transcript level in the salt stress-sensitive cultivar was significantly higher than that in the resistant cultivars. Overexpression of VvWRKY13 in Arabidopsis significantly inhibited the growth of transgenic plants under salt stress, indicating that VvWRKY13 has a negative effect on the salt stress response. The photosynthetic rate, contents of proline and soluble sugars, activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), as well as transcriptional levels of proline and soluble sugar metabolic genes, such as P5CS1, SS1, SS2 and G6PDH, as well as SOD and CAT encoding genes CAT1, CAT2, and Cu/Zn-SOD, all decreased under salt stress, whereas hydrogen peroxide and oxygen-free radical contents increased in transgenic Arabidopsis plants compared with those of wild-type plants. VvWRKY13 suppressed upregulation of SnRK2.3, ABF1, ABF2, ABF3, RD29B, RD29A, and RAB18 induced by salt stress, but showed no significant effect on the transcript levels of SnRK2.2, SnRK2.6, or RD22, indicating that VvWRKY13 affects salt stress tolerance via a specific abscisic acid signaling pathway. Gut microbiota bioconversion of polyphenols in predigested mango ‘Ataulfo’ peel was studied using a validated, dynamic in vitro human colon model (TIM-2) with faecal microbial inoculum. Dried peels were predigested with enzymatic treatment, followed by TIM-2 fermentation (72 h). Samples were taken at 0, 24, 48 and 72 h and analyzed by HPLC-QToF. Derivatives of hydroxyphenylpropionic, hydroxyphenylacetic and hydroxybenzoic acids, as well as, pyrogallol were the main polyphenols identified. These metabolites might derivate from flavonoid (flavanols and flavonols), gallate and gallotannin biotransformation. Despite the high content of ellagic acid in mango peel, low amounts were detected in TIM-2 samples due to transformation into urolythins A and C, mainly. Xanthone and benzophenone derivatives, specific to mango, remained after the colonic biotransformation, contrary to flavonoids, which completely disappeared. In conclusion, microbial-derived metabolites, such as xanthone and benzophenone derivatives, among others, are partially stable after colonic fermentation, and thus have the potential to contribute to mango peel bioactivity.

10,10-Bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)-3-methylphenyl]-9(10H)-anthrone, as a new aromatic diamine, was synthesized from 9(10H)-anthrone by three-step procedure. Low-temperature polycondensation of this diamine with various aromatic dicarboxylic acid dichlorides produced a series of new cardo poly(ether amide)s with moderate to high inherent viscosities of 0.86-1.43 dL g(-1)while the weight-average and number-average molecular weights were in the range of 48,600-59,800 and 29,800-35,600 g mol(-1), respectively. All the polymers were readily soluble in polar solvents such asN,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc),N,N-dimethylformamide,N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone, dimethyl sulfoxide, and pyridine, and afforded transparent, flexible, and strong films upon casting from DMAc solvent. These polymers had glass transition temperatures of 254-297 degrees C, 10% weight loss temperatures of 493-505 degrees C, and char yields of 61-64% at 800 degrees C in nitrogen. All polymers were amorphous and their films exhibited tensile strength of 80.7-101.4 MPa, elongation at break of 8.0-12.8%, and tensile modulus of 1.9-2.6 GPa. These polymers had low moisture uptake in the range of 2.13-4.02% and high transparency with an ultraviolet-visible absorption cutoff wavelength in the 322-375 nm range.

A new epoxy monomer, namely, tetraglycidyl-1,2-aminobenzamide (ER), was synthesized by condensation of the amines with epichlorohydrin in a basic medium. The obtained epoxy monomer was characterized by FT-IR and H-1 NMR spectroscopy. Rheological properties of this monomer were determined using an advanced rheometer. Subsequently, the synthesized ER monomer was investigated as corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in 1 M HCl solution. The adsorption properties of ER were analyzed by electrochemical, surface investigation and theoretical computational studies using DFT and molecular dynamics (MD). Results showed a high dependence of the viscosity of ER on temperature and concentration, and also, that ER has better inhibition performance. A good agreement between the results derived from computational (MD and DFT) and experimental methods was observed. The thermodynamic parameters, along with the kinetic parameters, showed that the adsorption of ER molecules onto carbon steel surface obeyed the Langmuir isotherm model, and the adsorption at metal-electrolyte interfaces involved both chemical and physical adsorption, but predominantly chemisorption mechanism.

In this content, a green approach for the ultrasound promoted in situ immobilization of Pd NPs over biodegradable chitosan/agarose modified ferrite NP (Fe3O4@CS-Agarose/Pd) is developed. The structural and physicochemical features of the material were estimated using advanced analytical techniques like FT-IR, ICP-OES, FESEM, EDS, XRD, TEM and VSM. The magnetic material was catalytically explored in the oxidation of alcohols under ultrasonic waves. Sonication had a significant role in enhancing the catalytic performance in the alcohol’s oxidation as compared to conventional heating. The heterogeneous nanocatalyst was efficiently recycled up to 10 times with nominal loss in catalytic activity. Towards the biological applications, the Fe3O4@CS-Agarose/Pd nanocomposite showed high antioxidant activities against DPPH free radicals, comparable to standard butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). In addition, it exhibited excellent cytotoxicity in terms of % cell viability against breast adenocarcinoma (MCF7), breast carcinoma (Hs 578Bst), infiltrating ductal cell carcinoma (Hs 319.T), and metastatic carcinoma (MDA-MB-453) cell lines. Substituted imidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) were investigated for their reactivity towards Na12Ge17 as a model system containing redox-sensitive Zintl cluster anions. The ILs proved widely inert for imidazolium cations with a 1,2,3-trisubstitution at least by alkyl groups, and for the anion bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)azanide (TFSI). A minute conversion of Na12Ge17 observed on long-time contact with such ILs was not caused by dissolution of the salt-like compound, and did thus not provide dissolved Ge clusters. Rather, a cation exchange led to the transfer of Na+ ions into solution. In contrast, by using benzophenone as an oxidizer, heterogeneous redox reactions of Na12Ge17 were initiated, transferring a considerable part of Na+ into solution. At optimized conditions, an X-ray amorphous product NaGe6.25 was obtained, which was thermally convertible to the crystalline type-II clathrate Na24-delta Ge136 with almost completely Na-filled polyhedral cages, and alpha-Ge. The presented method thus provides unexpected access to Na24-delta Ge136 in bulk quantities.

The advent of transfer hydrogenation and borrowing hydrogen reactions paved the way to manipulate simple alcohols in previously unthinkable manners and circumvented the need for hydrogen gas. Analogously, transfer hydrocarbylation could greatly increase the versatility of tertiary alcohols. However, this reaction remains unexplored because of the challenges associated with the catalytic cleavage of unactivated C-C bonds. Herein, we report a rhodium(I)-catalyzed shuttle arylation cleaving the C(sp(2))-C(sp(3)) bond in unstrained triaryl alcohols via a redox-neutral beta-carbon elimination mechanism. A selective transfer hydrocarbylation of substituted (hetero)aryl groups from tertiary alcohols to ketones was realized, employing benign alcohols as latent C-nucleophiles. All preliminary mechanistic experiments support a reversible b-carbon elimination/migratory insertion mechanism. In a broader context, this novel reactivity offers a new platform for the manipulation of tertiary alcohols in catalysis.

A new, operationally simple approach is presented to access arynes and their fluoride-activated precursors based on Ru-catalyzed C-H silylation of arylboronates. Chromatographic purification may be deferred until after aryne capture, rendering the arylboronates de facto precursors. This study included 1456 men and 1411 women who were trauma-exposed and underwent routine health examinations in a community epidemiological investigation. The participants completed the posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Check List-Civilian Version (PCL-C) for PTSD and medical examinations to detect metabolic syndrome. Adjustments for age, marriage, exercise, education, cigarette smoking, cancer, stroke, angina, and thyroid disease were performed. The relationship between PTSD and metabolic syndrome and each of its components was analyzed by multiple logistic regression. In women, PTSD was associated with metabolic syndrome (OR = 1.53, 95% CI = 1.01-1.95, P = .047) and the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol component (OR = 1.98, 95% CI = 1.04-2.12, P = .002). In men, PTSD was related to the hypertension component of metabolic syndrome (OR = 0.54, 95% CI = 0.31-0.92, P = .023). There was also a relationship between PTSD severity and metabolism (OR = 1.141, 95% CI = 1.002-1.280, P = 0.037) in women, and PTSD was inversely associated with the hypertension component (OR = 0.54, 95% CI = 0.31-0.92, P = .023) in men.
