For achieving a well-miscible and highly enhanced polyethylene/ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (PE/ UHMWPE) blend, which is an important blend for polyolefin materials with wide applications, tailored bonded interfacial intermolecular entanglement between the two phases was innovatively constructed via a facile reactive melt process through reaction between epoxy and carboxyl groups grafted onto polymer chains. The UHMWPE phase with obvious decreasing size and distribution was tightly embedded in a PE matrix, and the interfacial transition area increased dramatically, leading to forming a homogeneous and miscible blend. Meanwhile, the viscoelasticity and molecular entanglement density were improved remarkably, indicating an enhanced interfacial intermolecular diffusion, and a tight and robust dual network structure with covalent linkage and intermolecular entanglements was constructed in the blend. Obvious deformation with regular striation and many pulling-out UHMWPE fibrils were observed on an impact-fractured surface, and mechanical strength/toughness of the blend was remarkably enhanced. Furthermore, the wear rate and the friction coefficient were reduced significantly, and the worn surface presented smooth and flat features, confirming highly improved mechanical and tribological properties of the blend. This work provided a facile method to fabricate an enhanced PE/UHMWPE blend with application potential.

Objective: How the interactions between Candida albicans and Actinomyces viscosus contributed to the root caries was not clear. This study aimed to investigate their cross-kingdom interactions on the biomass and the cariogenic virulence in dual-species biofilms. Design: Suspensions of C. albicans and A. viscosus were formed the mono and polymicrobial biofilms in vitro. Crystal violet assay, viable plate count, scanning electron microscopy and fluorescence in situ hybridization were used to analyze the biomass and biofilm structure. Glycolytic pH drop and the spectrophotometric method were used to evaluate the acid production and hydroxyapatite dissolution, respectively. The exopolysaccharide production was measured by the anthrone-sulfuric acid method, while the adhesion force was measured by atomic force microscopy. Results: The biomass and colony-forming units of mixed-species were significantly increased compared to that of the mono-species at 24 h, 48 h, 72 h. The structure of dual-species biofilm had more microcolonies and was much denser. The dual-species biofilms significantly decreased the pH value and damaged the hydroxyapatite compared with the mono-species biofilms at various time points, indicating the strong cariogenic virulence. Moreover, the dual-species biofilms significantly enhanced the exopolysaccharide production and adhesion force suggesting the increase of biofilm adhesion. Conclusions: Cross-kingdom interactions of C. albicans and A. viscosus significantly elevated the biomass and cariogenic virulence of dual-species biofilm.

A total of eighteen 2-((2-(4-(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)phenyl)quinazolin-4-yl)oxy)-N-phenylacetamide derivatives were designed and synthesized, via hybrid pharmacophore approach. Among these compounds, chemical structure of compound 4a was unambiguously confirmed by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. All the compounds were evaluated in vitro for their inhibition activity against several important phytopathogenic bacteria and fungi in agriculture. The obtained results indicated that several compounds demonstrated potent antibacterial activity against Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo). For example, compounds 4c, 4g and 4q had EC50 values of 35.0, 36.5 and 32.4 mu g/mL toward this bacterium, respectively, around 1.5 times more active than commercial bactericide bismerthiazol (EC50 = 89.8 mu g/mL). Additionally, compounds 4j and 4p were found to display comparable antifungal activity against Gloeosporium fructigenum at 50 mu g/mL, to commercial fungicide hymexazol. Finally, the relationships between antibacterial activities and molecular structures of this class of compounds were discussed in detail. [GRAPHICS] .

Hypothesis: It is expected that incorporation of 2, 2, 6, 6-tetra-methyl piperidine-N-oxyl radical (TEMPO) and an imidazolium bromide bearing hydrophilic triethylene glycol (TEG) groups on Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell may not only result in a novel highly water-dispersible/magnetically separable multi-functional catalyst system for metal-free aerobic oxidation of alcohols, which operates through a synergistic relay pathway, but it could potentially provide a strong platform for simultaneous separation and recycling of all components. Experiments: The catalyst was prepared by anchoring TEMPO moieties onto a magnetic core-shell Fe3O4@SiO2 functionalized with an ionic liquid bearing TEG groups. The materials was characterized using transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, thermal gravimetric analysis, and elemental analysis. The performance of the catalyst was evaluated and quantitatively measured in the aerobic oxidation of alcohols in water. Findings: The catalyst exhibited excellent and stable colloidal dispersion in water and high performance in the aerobic oxidation of various types of alcohols under metal- and halogen-free reaction conditions. As hypothesized, strong synergistic effect between functionalized components was seen in the described reaction. The catalyst displayed excellent dual-adjustable-selectivity in the oxidation of primary alcohols to either the corresponding aldehydes or carboxylic acids by tuning the reaction solvent and/or reaction time and excellent recycling behavior through a double-separation-strategy. Imitating the structures and behaviors of natural creatures is of great significance to scientists to explore novel materials for practical applications. However, the design and fabrication of biomimetic devices with complex and outstanding performances is still on the way. A bilayer film composed of liquid crystalline networks (LCN) film and hydrochromic aggregation-induced-emission molecule-doped hydrophilic layer is prepared. Under different relative humidity, the composite film can deform and change fluorescence color simultaneously. The influence of the content of the hydrophilic matrix on the fluorescent property and humidity-responsive behaviors of the bilayer film is investigated. Thanks to the mechanical anisotropy provided by uniform-aligned LCN film, different modes of deformation of the bilayer film are achievable, like bending, curling, and twisting. More importantly, due to the independence of the LCN film and the non-mesogenic molecules brought by this bimorph strategy, complex alignment of the LCN film and modification by immiscible molecules are realized in a single LCN actuator. Based on the functional composite film, artificial flowers showing synergistic blooming and shape-changing is prepared. By regulating the molecular alignment of the LC mesogens of the LCN film, the artificial flowers can imitate various blooming behaviors of natural flowers like confederate jasmine and jade lotus.

A series of novel rutaecarpine derivatives were synthesized and subjected to pharmacological evaluation as PDE5 inhibitors. The structure-activity relationships were discussed and their binding conformation and simultaneous interaction mode were further clarified by the molecular docking studies. Among the 25 analogues, compound 8i exhibited most potent PDE5 inhibition with IC50 values about 0.086 mu M. Moreover, it also produced good effects against scopolamine-induced cognitive impairment in vivo. These results might bring significant instruction for further development of potential PDE5 inhibitors derived from rutaecarpine as a good candidate drug for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.

We report the synthesis of inexpensive and environmentally benign cobalt(0) nanoparticles on L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-dopa) functionalized and magnetite (Fe3O4) grafted graphene oxide (Co@GO/Fe3O4/L-dopa) which was fully characterized with different techniques such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM), X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM), Carbon Hydrogen Nitrogen (CHN) analysis, Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) and Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-AES). Graphene oxide was used as the core material due to its mechanical, electrical and thermal properties. In order to avoid the cumbersome process of separation, magnetite nanoparticles were coated over the graphene oxide. After the successful preparation of graphene oxide based magnetic nanoparticles, L-dopa was grafted over Fe3O4 nanoparticles so as to provide firm anchoring agent for cobalt nanoparticles. Finally, cobalt(0) nanoparticles were immobilized on the developed magnetic support. The catalytic efficiency of the synthesized catalyst was tested for Suzuki cross-coupling and oxidation reactions, usually carried out by precious and expensive second and third row transition metals; products were obtained in good to excellent yields. The synthesized catalyst represents an attractive alternative to conventional catalysts for Suzuki cross-coupling and oxidation reactions, and is recyclable up to five runs.

The condensation of 6-amino-1,3-dimethyluracil with substituted benzaldehydes gave six Schiff base derivatives which were brought into cyclizations with sodium azide, anthranilic acid, and 2-sulfanylbenzoic acid to afford new dihydrotetrazoles, dihydroquinazolin-4-ones, and 1,3-benzothiazine-4-ones containing a 1,3-di-methyluracil fragment. Facile green synthesis of BiOCl-TiO2 was done using combustion technique by Ixora coccinea leaf extract as fuel source. The said material was characterized using XRD, SEM, EDX, HRTEM, SAED, FTIR, and UV-DRS. The particle size was found to be approximately 60 nm and a crystallite size of 0.3 nm from TEM. The photocatalytic activity of the material was found out using photoluminescence studies, dye degradation and photocatalytic organic conversion. The material showed excellent dye degradation capacity for methylene blue with 80% of the dye degraded under 3 hrs. The stabilisation of electron-hole pair by the heterostructure gave it the ability to perform easy degradation. The degradation kinetics have also been studied. It also showed an excellent organic conversion property with formylation yield reaching up to 96% and total conversion of the reactant molecule. The material is a potent photocatalyst due to its great efficiency and can have a remarkable role in the synthesis of important organic molecules and detoxification of environment.Graphical AbstractThe heterostructure catalyses the conversion of amine to amides and mineralizes methylene blue under visible light condition.
