A [4+3] annulation of o-phenylenediamines with primary nitroallylic acetates affords nitrobenzodiazepines (NBDZs) in good to excellent yield. The reaction which proceeds in MeOH at room temperature in the absence of any base or catalyst involves a cascade S(N)2 N-nitroallylation-intramolecular aza-Michael addition sequence. In the case of mono-N-arylated o-phenylenediamines and o-aminobenzamides, the reaction stops at the S(N)2 stage affording nitroallylic amines. On the other hand, reaction of o-aminobenzamides with secondary nitroallylic acetates delivers S(N)2′ products. Formation of stable S(N)2 and S(N)2′ products provides insights into the reactivity of primary and secondary nitroallylic acetates and also the mechanism of formation of nitrobenzodiazepines. The ring-expanded strategy in nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) with the acceptor-donor-acceptor backbone has been reported to be an effective method to improve the fill factor (FF), open circuit voltage (VOC), and short circuit current (JSC) simultaneously in organic photovoltaics. However, design control is still missing in the ring-expanded strategy, and is urgently needed to further develop the origins and rules. To give insight into this strategy, a detailed theoretical study of the ring-expanded mechanism is performed on the systems comprising different 9,9 ‘-bifluorenylidene-based cores and 1,1-dicyanomethylene-3-indanone group. Some main parameters involved in photoelectric conversion mechanism under the donor excitation (DE) and/or acceptor excitation (AE) are assessed by changing the position and size of ring-expanded modes. The results show that the external ring-expanded modes can not only maintain the original advantage as much as possible, variations in sizes and positions also offer them an opportunity to regulate the aforementioned parameters systematically, leading to better improvement regardless of AE or DE. Thus, the steady improvement in performance mentioned previously is the key to overcoming the negative correlation among FF, VOC, and JSC. This insight and discovery of the ring-expanded strategy provides new design approaches for the next generation of NFAs.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) can be rationally designed with desired physicochemical properties for a far-ranging application in catalytic systems. Herein, a biguanide-functionalized covalent organic framework was designed and prepared via N-alkylation reaction, exhibiting a granular aggregate structure with high specific surface area. The biguanide-decorated DG-COF can be used as a highly efficient basic catalyst for the Knoevenagel condensation and Knoevenagel-Michael-cyclocondensation reaction. The present methodology is of excellent yields, short reaction times and simple operational procedure. DG-COF catalytic performance does not change after eight-times regeneration.

This study reports an innovative pathway for successfully synthesizing composite panels using various waste input. For this purpose, seven types of powder from waste or widely available filler i.e. Quartz off-cut, sand, waste seashell, dolomite, limestone aggregates, concrete waste and limestone dust were used. The study aims to assess the effectiveness and mechanical properties of the various waste powder in the production of powder-resin composites. The panels were then compared with the novel polymeric glass composite (PGC) in the previous study (Heriyanto et al., 2018). Following the same procedure in PGC, the filler was individually grounded to 64-108 mu m and chemically treated with amino silane coupling agent (CA). The powder filler (untreated or treated) is then mixed with the resin binder with a ratio of 80/20 respectively, followed by hot pressing the mixture at the pressure of 550 bar at 65 degrees C for 1 h. The final composite slab is then further cut for mechanical testing. It was found in the study that when CA was not added, surface roughness of the powder particles affected the flexural strength of the final panel significantly. High surface roughness particles such as in Quartz, sand and seashell adhere effectively with the resin binder which led to higher strength. On the contrary, other factors like smooth particle morphology in glass, dolomite and limestone as well as porous structure in concrete and clump of very fine powder in limestone dust degrade the strength of the final panels. With CA addition, adhesion between resin and powder filler were improved significantly. Flexural strength after the CA treatment was found to be much affected by particle characteristics. Silica-based panels i.e. quartz, sand and glass which consist of high strength and hardness of silica particles perform better compared to that of calcium carbonate-based panels. Compression strength, toughness, stiffness, scratch resistance, density and water absorption were also reported in this study. The properties of all the treated panels are found to be comparable, or if not, much better than natural stones. These new approaches of using waste filler in powder – resin based composites can be a new alternative to produce green materials that deliver economic and environmental benefits. Wnt/beta-catenin signaling pathway is implicated in the etiology and progression of metabolic disorders. Although lines of genetic evidence suggest that blockage of this pathway yields favorable outcomes in treating such ailments, few inhibitors have been used to validate the promising genetic findings. Here, we synthesized and characterized a novel class of triazole-based Wnt/beta-catenin signaling inhibitors and assessed their effects on energy metabolism. One of the top inhibitors, compound 3a, promoted Axin stabilization, which led to the proteasome degradation of beta-catenin and subsequent inhibition of the Wnt/beta-catenin signaling in cells. Treatment of hepatocytes and high fat diet-fed mice with compound 3a resulted in significantly decreased hepatic lipid accumulation. Moreover, compound 3a improved glucose tolerance of high fat diet-fed mice without noticeable toxicity, while downregulating the genes involved in the glucose and fatty acid anabolisms. The new inhibitors are expected to be further developed for the treatment of metabolic disorders.

The advent of transfer hydrogenation and borrowing hydrogen reactions paved the way to manipulate simple alcohols in previously unthinkable manners and circumvented the need for hydrogen gas. Analogously, transfer hydrocarbylation could greatly increase the versatility of tertiary alcohols. However, this reaction remains unexplored because of the challenges associated with the catalytic cleavage of unactivated C-C bonds. Herein, we report a rhodium(I)-catalyzed shuttle arylation cleaving the C(sp(2))-C(sp(3)) bond in unstrained triaryl alcohols via a redox-neutral beta-carbon elimination mechanism. A selective transfer hydrocarbylation of substituted (hetero)aryl groups from tertiary alcohols to ketones was realized, employing benign alcohols as latent C-nucleophiles. All preliminary mechanistic experiments support a reversible b-carbon elimination/migratory insertion mechanism. In a broader context, this novel reactivity offers a new platform for the manipulation of tertiary alcohols in catalysis.

Herein, via chemoselective N-mono and N,N-diarylation of an aryl/hetaryl amino amide reaction using benzyne or arynes, an amide-substituted triaryl amine derivative and diaryl amine derivatives were afforded. The scope and limitation of the present study have been studied. The products thus obtained were synthetically transformed to highly functionalized biphenyl bridged heterocycles via Suzuki coupling and condensation with 4,4-biphenyl dialdehyde. Evaluation of the photophysical properties has revealed that the triaryl amine derivatives are blue emissive with high quantum yields, whereas the heterocyclic triaryl amine derivatives are blue-red emissive. The benzofuran-derived compound 4i was found to be blue emissive with high quantum yield, whereas the pyridine-derived compound 5j was found to be red emissive with low quantum yield.

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) have shown promises in numerous applications such as bio-inspired robotics, tactile displays, tunable optics, and microfluidics, owing to their unique combination of large actuation strain, high energy density, and light weight. However, the practical applications of the DEAs have been hindered partly due to their poor reliability and durability under high-strain actuation. A major failure mechanism is from the localized electrical breakdown. Compliant electrodes with self-clearing capability have been studied to prevent premature failures. Here, an interpenetrating bilayer compliant electrode comprising a thin layer of a water-based polyurethane (WPU) overcoated on an ultrathin single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) layer is reported. The thin polyurethane layer serves as the dielectric barrier to suppress corona discharges of the nanotubes in air. The SWNT+WPU bilayer electrode has the capability to self-clear at the breakdown sites, enhancing the fault tolerance and mendability of the DEA at a large-strain actuation. Stable actuation at 150% area strain for 1000 cycles under square-wave voltage and 5.5-h continuous actuation at a constant voltage have been achieved for acrylic elastomer-based DEAs.
