Most of the known methods for the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds have disadvantages, such as a long reaction time and aggressive conditions. We have developed a new, rather simple and efficient method for the synthesis of a number of glycoluryls and hydantoins in water using a etidronic acid (HEDP) as Green catalyst. So, for the first time, the condensation reaction of ureas with 1, 2-dicarbonyl compounds was carried out in the presence of HEDP. Also based on NMR studies, a chemism of these reactions, which is stepwise, is proposed. It has been established that the optimal conditions for the synthesis of glycoluryls and hydantoins using HEDP are: temperature 80 degrees C-90 degrees C, 40-20 minutes, and the ratio of urea and HEDP is 1:1. In all cases, the remaining aqueous filtrate containing HEDP after the reaction can be reused for other cycles synthesis of glycoluril and other compounds, because HEDP is not converted during the reaction.

A gold-catalyzed tandem annulation of propargylic alcohols and pyridylhomopropargylic alcohols is achieved, providing an atom-economical approach to a diverse set of polycyclic dihydrobenzofurans in good yields. The reaction proceeds via the 5-endo-dig cyclization/Meyer-Schuster rearrangement/Friedel-Crafts-type pathway. In this way, three C-C bonds and one C-O bond form to give a polycyclic skeleton in a one-pot process. Moreover, the products exhibit unique optical properties, which reveal their potential application value.

The chemical functionalization or modification of polymers to alter or improve the physical and mechanical properties constitutes an important field in macromolecular research. Fabrication of polymeric materials via structural tailoring of commercial or commodity polymers that are produced in vast quantities especially possess unique advantages in material applications. In the present study, we report on benign chemical modification of unsaturated styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS) copolymer using available backbone alkene groups. Covalent attachment of aldehyde functional substrates onto reactive isoprene double bond residues was conveniently carried out using UV-induced Paterno-Buchi [2 + 2] cycloaddition. Model organic compounds with different structures were utilized in high efficiency chemical modification of parent polymer chains via oxetane ring formation. Functionalization studies were confirmed via(1)H NMR, FT-IR and SEC analyses. The methodology was extended to covalent crosslinking of polymer chains to obtain organogels with tailorable crosslinking degrees and physical characteristics. Considering the outstanding elastic properties of unsaturated rubbers and their high commercial availability, abundant reactive double bonds in backbone chains of these polymers offer easy to implement structural modification via proposed Paterno-Buchi photocycloaddition.

Intermittent food restriction (IFR) is used mainly for weight loss; however, its effects on adipose tissue are not known when alternating with an obesogenic diet. Sialylation can influence the stability, half-life, and immunogenicity of glycoproteins, but sialylated N-glycans are known to be difficult to analyze. Human alpha1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) is reported to have glycans that consist of sialylated N-glycans. The N-glycan profiling of AGP is qualitatively and quantitatively investigated here by UPLC and LC-ESI-MS/MS. Three fluorescent tags (AB, AA, and ProA) and two separation columns (HILIC and AEX-HILIC) were adopted to confirm and compare each analytical characteristic. The results of AA were comparable to those of the well-established AB. The qualification of ProA was notable due to its superior fluorescence intensity and ionization efficiency, and ProA showed smaller quantitative or larger-sized fragments in LC-ESI-MS/MS compared to AB and AA. However, the MS quantification of ProA was distorted because the increased sialylation level decreased the LC-ESI-MS/MS ionization efficiency. HILIC had better peak separability, AEX-HILIC had an advantage in UPLC sialylation profiling, and each isomeric glycan could be Identified by both columns in LC-ESI-MS/MS. In conclusion, ProA is favored for UPLC and LC-ESI-MS/MS detection but not reliable for MS quantification. This study firstly demonstrates the qualification and quantification of sialylated N-glycans by comparing the conunonly used analytical conditions with different fluorescent tags, columns, and instruments.

The Hirshfeld population analysis was adopted to predict the selectivity in electrophilic substitution. TMS and t-Bu groups were found to considerably accelerate the reaction at C2 positions to produce C3symmetric isomers. Correlation between distortion and charge distribution within benzene rings was systematically examined.

Trace organic contaminants (TOrCs) in waste active sludge (WAS) have caused many concerns due to their recalcitrance and detriment to the performance of anaerobic digestion (AD). In this study, UV (2 h) combined with calcium peroxide (CaO2, 0.1 g g(-1)-VSS (VSS, volatile suspended solid) was proposed as a suitable sludge pretreatment to enhance the AD performance with an increase in the production of maximum total short-chain fatty acids (421.3 %) and methane (119.2 %). Meanwhile, above 50 % removal efficiency for 19 detected TOrCs was achieved. UV and CaO2 had a synergistic effect on the subsequent AD of WAS. Both UV and Ca(OH)(2) produced by CaO2 played important roles in the dissolution of WAS and the subsequent AD, while UV-direct and %OH-indirect photolysis accounted for TOrCs attenuation. In order to predict TOrCs attenuation by UV/CaO2 treatment, a TOrCs photolysis model was tentatively established using carbamazepine as an indicator. This predictive model expressed a good prediction with adj-R-2 = 0.94, and the difference of predicted and measured values was within 27.3 %. This work evaluates a sludge pretreatment for simultaneously TOrCs attenuation and methane accumulation, laying foundation for promotion of sludge resource recycling.

We report herein an efficient method to synthesize triptycenes by the reaction of benzynes and anthranoxides, which are electron-rich and readily prepared from the corresponding anthrones. Using this method, 1,9-syn-substituted triptycenes were regioselectively obtained employing 3-methoxybenzynes. This method was also applied to synthesize pentiptycenes. A DFT study revealed that the cycloaddition of lithium anthranoxide and benzyne proceeds stepwise.

Membrane fouling is a major challenge for long-term oil/water separation. The incomplete degradation of organic pollutants or membrane damage exists in the common methods of membrane regeneration. Herein, a dual-responsive nanofibrous membrane with high water-in-oil emulsion separation efficiency and smart cleaning properties is reported, which shows complete restoration of its original separation performance. The pH-responsive and upper critical solution temperature (UCST)-type thermoresponsive nanofibrous membrane with a micro/nanosphere structure was developed via a one-step-blending electrospinning strategy. The membrane displays high hydrophobicity/oleophilicity at pH 7 and 25 degrees C and hydrophilicity/oleophobicity at pH 3 and 55 degrees C. As a result, it exhibits an ultrahigh permeability of 60528.76 L m(-2) h(-1) bar(-1) and a separation efficiency of 99.5% for water-in-D5 emulsions at room temperature (25 degrees C). Moreover, the contaminated membranes could be easily reclaimed by being rinsed with warm acidic water (pH 3 and 55 degrees C). The membrane maintained high separation performance after being used for multiple cycles, indicating its scalable application for purifying emulsified oil. This study provides a facial method of constructing membranes with multiscale hierarchical structures and a new idea for the design of recyclable oil/water separation membranes.
