Voltammetric sensor using a symmetrical derivative of anthrone3 (1,7-diamino-3,9-dibutyl benzo[1,2,3-de:4,5,6-d’e’]diquinoline-2,8(3H,9H)-dione) (SPE-A) has been developed as a probe for Hg(II) ions. Performance of the probe as screen-printed electrode modified with the receptor (SPE-A) has been compared with anthrone3 in solution phase, using 1:1 water-acetonitrile solvent system. Anthrone3 displayed an electrochemically quasi-reversible nature in voltammograms with both the systems and is presented as a novel disposable voltammetric sensor for mercury ions. Upon interaction with cations, both the electrode systems showed sensitivity towards Hg2+ ions with a lower detection limit of 0.61 mu M. The magnitude of the voltammetric current with the SPE-A exhibited three times the current obtained with a bare glassy carbon electrode (GC). Kinetic performance of the SPE-A electrode is better than the GC electrode. The morphological studies indicate reusability of the electrodes.

A borrowing carbonate-enabled allylic cross-amination reactions employing allylic alcohol were discovered via merging acyl/allyl C-O bonds activation under nickel catalysis. The key component of this protocol is the ability of nickel [Ni(II)-Ni(0)] to execute a relay process via the nucleophilic trapping of the generated acyl Ni complex, resulting from the acyl C-O bond cleavage of dialkyl carbonates, followed by selective allylic C-O bond activations (allylic C-O vs alkyl C-O vs acyl C-O) to yield pi-allyINi-complexes. The finding truly represents Ni-catalyzed green allylic amination reactions under additive(s)-free conditions with excellent chemo- (N vs O), regio- (linear vs branched), and stereoselectivity (E vs Z) with a wide range of fundamentally challenging N-heterocycles and allylic alcohols. The reaction is scalable, does not require harmful reaction media and a globe box, and is successfully applied to the scale-up synthesis of pharmaceuticals (cinnarizine, flunarizine, and naftifine) with promising yields.

Group 6 alkynyl Fischer carbene complexes behave as electrophiles with highly reactive masked dienes such as anthrone and 3-hydroxy-2-pyrone, which also can react as bidentate nucleophiles. Both Cr-0 and W-0 alkynyl carbene complexes require tertiary amines to promote the formation of 1,4-C-addition products, but a marked dependence of the reactivity on the metal was observed. Although W-0 complexes form exclusively the 1,4-C-adducts in the presence of a catalytic amount of base, Cr-0 complexes lead to new anthrone-derived bis-carbene complexes, obtained by a sequential 1,4-C- and 1,4-O-addition process with high diastereoselectivity and only in the presence of an excess of base. DFT computational studies show that the gap between the LUMO of the complex and the HOMO of the anthrone determines the differences in reactivity and that the stability of the intermediate metal allenyls formed after the initial 1,4-addition is decisive for the outcome of the reaction.

CoFe2O4@SiO2-CPTES-Guanidine-Cu(II) magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized and used as a new, inexpensive and efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the synthesis of polyhydroquinolines and 2,3-dihydroquinazoline-4(1H)-ones and for the oxidation of sulfides. In this study, the novel bifunctional homochiral thiourea-L-prolinamides 1-4, tertiary amino-L-prolinamide 5, and bis-L-prolinamides 6 and 7 were prepared from enantiomerically pure (11R,12R)-11,12-diamino-9,10-dihydro-9,10-ethanoanthracene 8 and (11S,12S)-11,12-diamino-9,10-dihydro-9,10-ethanoanthracene ent-8. Highly enantioselective and diastereoselective aldolic intermolecular reactions (up to 95% enantiomeric excess, 93:7 anti/syn) between aliphatic ketones (20 equiv) and a range of aromatic aldehydes (1 equiv) were successfully carried out in the presence of water (10 equiv) and monochloroacetic acid (10 mol%), solvent-free conditions, at room temperature over 24 h using organocatalysts 1-7 (5 mol%). Stereoselective induction using density functional theory-based methods was consistent with the experimental data.

Two photon (TP) fluorescence bioimaging proves to be a powerful tool for biomarker detection and disease diagnosis. However, the probes possessing both good optical properties and biocompatibility are limited. Herein a novel scaffold based on the conjugate of coumarin and quinazolinone (CQ) exhibited brilliant TP fluorescence properties (action cross-section value Phi delta(max) = 299 GM and TP action cross section per molecular weight Phi delta(max)/MW = 0.83) in water. The fluorescence properties are mainly attributed to the enlarged conjugate structure by intramolecular hydrogen bond. The TP fluorescence can be easily switched via amide group modification-deprotection strategy to regulate the formation of hydrogen bond. As a proof of concept, CQ was further engineered with p-nitrobenzyl moiety to afford 2-(7-(diethylamino)-2-oxo-2H-chromen-3-yl)-3-(4-nitrobenzyl) quinazolin-4(3H)-one (NBCQ) for mitochondria nitroreductase (NTR) imaging in normoxia and hypoxia, which proved to be a sensitive and selective off-on NTR fluorescent probe.

Despite certain limitations, bioaugmentation enhances the efficiency of bioremediation systems. In this study, three aqueous extracts (APE, ACE and APE) from aged residual biomixtures in three biopurification systems (BPSs) exposed to pesticides at a pilot scale were found to improve pesticide removal. The addition of ACEs and AVEs to solutions containing the model compound diuron increased removal rates 6- and 17-fold, respectively, as compared to APEs. These extracts also increased the removal of the metabolite 3,4-dichloroaniline, while AVEs, in particular, were found to remove all pesticides within 9 days. Three metabolites less hazardous than 3,4-dichloroaniline were identified by SPME/GC/MS. AVEs, which also enhance linuron removal in liquid media, were found to increase diuron removal 6-fold in BPSs. We observed an increase in the relative abundance of taxa, such as Chloroflexi, Acidobacteria, Gemmatimonadetes, Firmicutes, Deinococcus-Thermus and especially Proteobacteria (10%), in AV biomixtures, as well as an enrichment of gamma-proteobacteria and the actinobacterial genus Dokdonella in AVEs with respect to initial noncontaminated IV biomixture. We demonstrate that extracts containing a pollutant-acclimatized microbiome could be used as part of a bioaugmentation strategy to improve the functioning of on-farm BPSs and contaminated systems. Designing surface-confined molecular systems capable of expressing changes in functional properties as a result of slight variations in chemical structure under the influence of an external stimulus is of contemporary interest. In this context, we have designed three tetraterpyridine ligands with variations in their core architecture (phenyl vs tetraphenylethynyl vs bithiophene) to create spray-coated electrochromic assemblies of iron(II)-based metallosupramolecular polymer network films on transparent conducting oxide substrates. These assemblies exhibited molecular permeability and spectroelectrochemical properties that are in turn dictated by the ligand structure. Electrochromic films with high coloration efficiencies (up to 1050 cm(2)/C) and superior optical contrast (up to 76%) with a concomitant color-to-color redox transition were readily achieved. These functional switching elements were integrated into sandwich-type electrochromic cells (CE up to 641 cm(2)/C) that exhibited high contrast ratios of up to 56%, with attractive ON-OFF ratios, fast switching kinetics, and high operational stability. Every measurable spectroelectrochemical property of the films and devices is an associated function of the ligand structure that coordinates the same metal ion to different extents. While exhibiting a ligand-structure induced differential metal coordination leading to porosity and spectroelectrochemical diversification, these assemblies allow the creation of electrochromic patterns and images by a simple spray-coating technique.
