The formation of proton complexes of the photoinduced colored open form of naphthopyrans in solutions was first discovered and investigated by spectral-kinetic method. The complexes exhibit a new absorption band in the visible region, which is bathochromically shifted relative to the absorption band of the photoinduced colored open form. With an increase in the concentration of perchloric or hydrochloric acid, this long-wavelength absorption band appears immediately after the addition of acids to solutions of photochromic compounds. The protonation efficiency depends on the strength of the acids.

Although synthetic antioxidants (AOs) and photoinitiators (PIs) are known to be used in printing inks, there are little data on residual concentrations in printing paper products. In the present study, twenty-five PIs, ten AOs, and six transformation products were analyzed in two types of printing paper products, magazines and paperboard food packaging materials, both of which are unavoidable everyday products in our life. Nine AOs and six transformation products can be detected in food packaging materials with total concentrations (geometric mean, GM) of 1.16 x 10(4) ng/dm2. Twenty-two PIs were detected in food packaging materials with total concentrations (GM) of 1.76 x 10(4) ng/dm2. These chemicals were also detected in magazines, albeit at low concentrations (GM of AOs: 466 ng/dm(2), GM of PIs: 1.17 x 10(3) ng/dm(2)). Magazine front covers were found to have much higher concentrations of the target compounds than magazine inside pages. Tris(2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl) phosphate (AO168O), 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol (BHT), bisphenol A (BPA), and benzophenone (BP) were among the predominant chemicals in those printing paper products. Preliminary calculations suggest that dermal exposure to AOs (GM: 6.25 ng/day) and PIs (GM: 17.0 ng/day) via contact with printing paper products is a minor exposure pathway compared to food intake/dust ingestion and is exceedingly unlikely to cause adverse health effects.

Liquid chromatography enantioseparation and determination of enantiomeric purity of synthetized xanthone and benzophenone derivatives comprising one or more chiral moieties are reported. High enantioselectivity and resolution were observed in (S,S)-Whelk-O1 chiral stationary phase (CSP) for the enantiomeric mixtures of compounds comprising an aromatic ring linked to the stereogenic center(s), with alpha values ranging from 1.35 to 4.15 and Rs values ranging from 2.22 to 13.87. Among all the tested enantiomeric mixtures, those comprising three chiral moieties positioned in the xanthone scaffold gave the best chromatographic results. Enantiomers comprising an alkyl chain linked to the stereogenic centers were enantioseparated on a Lux (R) Celullose-2 CSP. For both CSPs, the elution was performed in polar organic mode. The enantiomeric ratio (e.r.) values were always higher than 99%. Additionally, assessment of chiral recognition mechanisms on (S,S)-Whelk-O1 CSP was performed by molecular docking approach, which are in accordance with the chromatographic parameters. The nature and number of chiral moieties in the central aromatic scaffold of either xanthone or benzophenone derivatives are proved to be crucial for enantiorecognition. The evaluation of the growth inhibition of human tumor cell lines revealed that (S,S)-(+)-5 was the most potent compound, with values of GI(50) of 12.83 +/- 2.09 mu M for A375-C5 melanoma, 12.40 +/- 1.16 mu M for MCF-7 breast adenocarcinoma, and 13.06 +/- 1.29 mu M for NCI-H460 non-small cell lung cancer. In some cases, the growth inhibitory effects demonstrated to be dependent on the stereochemistry of the compounds.

The NAD(+)-dependent deacetylase SIRT2 represents an attractive target for drug development. Here, we designed and synthesized drug-like SIRT2-selective inhibitors based on an analysis of the putative binding modes of recently reported SIRT2-selective inhibitors and evaluated their SIRT2-inhibitory activity. This led us to develop a more drug-like diketopiperazine structure as a hydrogen bond (H-bond) hunter to target the substrate-binding site of SIRT2. Thioamide 53, a conjugate of diketopiperazine and 2-anilinobenzamide which is expected to occupy the selectivity pocket of SIRT2, exhibited potent SIRT2-selective inhibition. Inhibition of SIRT2 by 53 was mediated by the formation of a 53-ADP-ribose conjugate, suggesting that 53 is a mechanism-based inhibitor targeting the selectivity pocket, substrate-binding site, and NAD(+)-binding site. Furthermore, 53 showed potent antiproliferative activity toward breast cancer cells and promoted neurite outgrowth of Neuro-2a cells. These findings should pave the way for the discovery of novel therapeutic agents for cancer and neurological disorders.

A series of synthetically accessible ligands based on new 2-(R-sulfonamido)benzamide have been prepared (R = methyl for H3M; R = 4-toly for H3T and T2CN; R = 2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl for H(3)iP and HiPCN). In this study, a new fluorescence probe HMAQ based on quinazoline and diaminomaleonitrile was constructed for sensing ClO- and Al3+. A fluorescence blue-shift with 102 nm together with a color change from golden-yellow to colorless was found by hypochlorite-induced hydrolysis of -CH = N- group to release the initial fluorophore. Besides, Al3+ could cause a 72-nm blue-shifted emission spectra and a color change from golden-yellow to brown. As expected, HMAQ exhibited a satisfactory selectivity and sensitivity to ClO-/Al3+ with a quick response. Most notably, the reversibility of the [HMAQ+Al3+] complex could be used to detect ClO- and Al3+ simultaneously without mutual interferences. The detection limits of HMAQ for ClO- and Al3+ were turned out to be 102 nM and 1.56 nM, respectively. Background Pollination services provided by solitary bees, the largest group of bees worldwide, are critical to the vitality of ecosystems and agricultural systems alike. Disconcertingly, bee populations are in decline, and while no single causative factor has been identified, pesticides are believed to play a role in downward population trends. The effects of pesticides on solitary bee species have not been previously systematically cataloged and reviewed. Objectives This systematic scoping review examines available evidence for effects of pesticide exposure on solitary bees to identify data gaps and priority research needs. Methods A systematic literature search strategy was developed to identify and document reports on solitary bee pesticide exposure-effects investigations. Literature was subsequently screened for relevance using a Population, Exposures, Comparators, and Outcomes (PECO) statement and organized into a systematic evidence map. Investigations were organized by effect category (lethal effects on immatures, lethal effects on adults, sublethal effects on immatures, and sublethal effects on adults), species, pesticide class, and publication year. Results A comprehensive literature search of Web of Science and ProQuest Agricultural & Environmental Science supplemented by targeted internet searching and reference mining yielded 176 reports and publications for title and abstract screening and 65 that met PECO criteria (22 included lethal and 43 included sublethal effects endpoints). Relevant design details (pesticide, test compound configuration, study type, species, sex, exposure duration) were extracted into literature inventory tables to reveal the extent endpoints have been investigated and areas in need of additional research. Conclusions Evidence mapping revealed diversity in the pesticides and endpoints studied across the database. However, dilution across bee species, lack of complementary laboratory work and paucity of replicated investigations complicate efforts to interpret and apply available data to support pesticide risk assessment.

Herein a novel scaffold based on the conjugate of coumarin and quinazolinone (CQ) exhibited brilliant TP fluorescence properties (action cross-section value Phi delta(max) = 299 GM and TP action cross section per molecular weight Phi delta(max)/MW = 0.83) in water. The fluorescence properties are mainly attributed to the enlarged conjugate structure by intramolecular hydrogen bond. The TP fluorescence can be easily switched via amide group modification-deprotection strategy to regulate the formation of hydrogen bond. As a proof of concept, CQ was further engineered with p-nitrobenzyl moiety to afford 2-(7-(diethylamino)-2-oxo-2H-chromen-3-yl)-3-(4-nitrobenzyl) quinazolin-4(3H)-one (NBCQ) for mitochondria nitroreductase (NTR) imaging in normoxia and hypoxia, which proved to be a sensitive and selective off-on NTR fluorescent probe.
