The iron oxide was successfully supported on activated clay/carbon through an experimentally viable protocol for both hydrations of nitrile to amide and reduction of nitro compounds to amines. We have developed a fast and convenient method to prepare dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-ones from anthranilamide and different aromatic aldehydes by using the Mukaiyama reagent. The reactions proceeded smoothly with a broad scope of substrates providing the expected products in good to excellent yields under with a low environmental factor and high atom economy. OBJECTIVE Neurosurgical education in the US has changed significantly as a consequence of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Institutional social distancing requirements have resulted in many neurosurgical programs utilizing video conferencing for educational activities. However, it is unclear how or if these practices should continue after the pandemic. The objective of this study was to characterize virtual education in neurosurgery and understand how it should be utilized after COVID-19. METHODS A 24-question, 3-part online survey was administered anonymously to all 117 US neurosurgical residency programs from May 15, 2020, to June 15, 2020. Questions pertained to the current use of virtual conferencing, preferences over traditional conferences, and future inclinations. The Likert scale (1 = strongly disagree, 3 = neutral, 5 = strongly agree) was used. Comparisons were calculated using the Mann-Whitney U-test. Statistical significance was set at 0.05. RESULTS One-hundred eight responses were recorded. Overall, 38 respondents (35.2%) were attendings and 70 (64.8%) were trainees. Forty-one respondents (38.0%) indicated attending 5-6 conferences per week and 70 (64.8%) attend national virtual conferences. When considering different conference types, there was no overall preference (scores < 3) for virtual conferences over traditional conferences. In regard to future use, respondents strongly agreed that they would continue the practice at some capacity after the pandemic (median score 5). Overall, respondents agreed that virtual conferences would partially replace traditional conferences (median score 4), whereas they strongly disagreed with the complete replacement of traditional conferences (median score 1). The most common choices for the partial replacement of tradition conferences were case conferences (59/108, 55%) and board preparation (64/108, 59%). Lastly, there was a significant difference in scores for continued use of virtual conferencing in those who attend nationally sponsored conferences (median score 5, n = 70) and those who do not (median score 4, n = 38; U = 1762.50, z = 2.97, r = 0.29, p = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS Virtual conferences will likely remain an integral part of neurosurgical education after the COVID-19 pandemic has abated. Across the country, residents and faculty report a preference for continued use of virtual conferencing, especially virtual case conferences and board preparation. Some traditional conferences may even be replaced with virtual conferences, in particular those that are more didactic. Fluorescent materials with a large enough Stokes shift (>100 nm) have widely prospect in light conversion agricultural film, cell-imaging, chemosensory and so on. However, most of traditional fluorescent dyes displayed small Stokes shifts which severely limited their application. In this paper, a side-chain alternative copolymer named P(DMPNI-alt-TPE) was developed, in which the two fluorophores were next to each other: the AIE-active tetraphenylethene (TPE) acted as energy donor, while naphthalimide derivative (DMPNI) with intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) character as energy acceptor. Attributed to this unique structure, the copolymer combined efficient dark/fluorescence resonance energy transfer (DRET/FRET) and polarity-sensitivity. And therefore it showed impressive large pseudo-Stokes Shift up to 304 nm and 302 nm in solution and aggregative state respectively. Interestingly, this copolymer exhibited a V-shaped fluorescence variation curve in a series of THF solutions with increasing fraction of water. Moreover, P(DMPNI-alt-TPE) emitted different color fluorescence in various solvents upon UV light, so that its pseudo-Stokes shift was not only large but also tunable, and the changing range was from 262 to 304 nm. Lastly, the potential possibility of P(DMPNI-alt-TPE) as light conversion agricultural film was investigated. This research provided a new approach for the development of fluorescence materials with large and tunable Stokes shift.

Organic molecules bearing acetoxy moieties are important functionalities in natural products, drugs, and agricultural chemicals. Synthesis of such molecules via transition metal-catalyzed C-O bond formation can be achieved in the presence of a carefully chosen directing group to alleviate the challenges associated with regioselectivity. An alternative approach is to use ubiquitous carboxylic acids as starting materials and perform a decarboxylative coupling. Herein, we report conditions for a photocatalytic decarboxylative C-O bond formation reaction that provides rapid and facile access to the corresponding acetoxylated products. Mechanistic investigations suggest that the reaction operates via oxidation of the carboxylate followed by rapid decarboxylation and oxidation by Cu(OAc)(2).

Ecological wastewater treatment plant (EWWTP), a kind of emerging wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in recent years, combined microbiology with botany which is efficient for the removal of nitrogen and organic matter, as well as deodorization. The occurrence and removal of micro-organic pollutants in EWWTPs were still not well known. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their typical derivatives (SPAHs) including the oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs), chlorinated PAHs (ClPAHs), and methyl PAHs (MPAHs) were investigated in an EWWTP in Guangdong Province, China. The concentrations of the sigma 6 OPAHs (114-384ng/L) were higher than the sigma 16 PAHs (92-250ng/L), and much higher than the sigma 4 MPAHs (13-64ng/L) and sigma 9 ClPAHs (2-3ng/L) in the EWWTP and the effluent receiving river. The total removal efficiencies of the PAHs, OPAHs, MPAHs, and ClPAHs in the EWWTP (43 +/- 14%, 41 +/- 7%, 55 +/- 16%, and 18 +/- 4%) were lower than the traditional WWTPs, probably due to the lower concentration of the sludge in the ecological treatment. The advanced treatment process (microfiltration and UV disinfection treatment) contributed much less (0-20%) to the whole removal efficiency than the ecological treatment (80-100%). The effluent from the EWWTP slightly reduced the PAHs and SPAHs concentrations in the receiving river. The high concentrations of the PAHs and SPAHs in the receiving river were similar to the influent of the EWWTP, indicating that some untreated wastewater was directly discharged to the river, especially in the upstream.
