Novel chiral secondary amines bearing a tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine scaffold were created and used for catalytic asymmetric Michael reaction of anthrone with nitroalkenes. The relevant adducts were obtained in good to excellent yields (82%-98%) and enantioselectivities (75%-98%).

We report a set of electrochemically regulated protocols for the divergent synthesis of ketones and beta-keto esters from the same beta-hydroxycarboxylic acid starting materials. Enabled by electrochemical control, the anodic oxidation of carboxylic acids proceeded in either a one-electron or a two-electron pathway, leading to a 1,4-aryl transfer or a semipinacol-type 1,2-group transfer product with excellent chemoselectivity. The 1,4-aryl transfer represents an unprecedented example of carbon-to-oxygen group transfer proceeding via a radical mechanism. In contrast to previously reported radical group transfer reactions, this 1,4-group transfer process features the migration of electron-rich aryl substituents. Furthermore, with these chemoselective electrochemical oxidation protocols, a range of ketones and beta-keto esters including those possessing a challenging-to-access medium-sized ring could be synthesized in excellent yields.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are mutagenic and carcinogenic. 16 PAHs as priority pollutants listed by the US Environmental Protection Agency were usually monitored. Therefore, multiple potentially toxic polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) are not monitored. In this study, atmospheric particulate matter samples from Beijing were analyzed using atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI) Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-time-of-flight (GC x GC-TOF) mass spectrometry. The FT-ICR data detected high molecular weight PAHs, alkylated PAHs (APAHs) and heteroatom PAHs. The GC x GC-TOF data tentatively identified 386 PACs in five categories of identification confidence. Twenty-one spectra in the unknown class were manually resolved. Eighty-two PACs with high identification confidence were proposed for further research. The identities of five PAHs and five APAHs that are currently not regulated were confirmed using available standards and quantified in some samples. Some of these PACs, such as dibenzo[a,e]pyrene (C22H14) and 1-methylpyrene (C17H12), should be of concern because of their contamination levels and the high toxicities of themselves and/or their derivatives. This study highlights the possibility of expanding the traditional lists of PAHs to improve pollution control and risk assessment accuracy.

Sulfate radical (SO4 center dot(-)) and hydroxyl radical (center dot OH) generated from persulfate or peroxymonosulfate in AOPs have been widely used in contaminant degradation. Anthracene (ANT) can be decomposed by SO4 center dot(-) and center dot OH. The processes of ANT decomposition were investigated using theoretical calculations in this paper. The initiation reactions of ANT, anthrone, anthraquinone (ATQ) and 1-hydroxylanthraquinone (1-hATQ) by two radicals are studied. The highest free energy barriers of initiation reactions are 22.30 kcal mol(-1) in ATQ + SO4 center dot(-) reaction and 6.84 kcal mol(-1) in ATQ + center dot OH reaction. Comparing the rate constants of initiation reaction through the two radicals at 273-373 K, it can be concluded that SO4 center dot(-) and center dot OH both play important roles on the initiation of ANT and anthrone at lower pH. For ATQ and 1-hATQ, center dot OH is more important than SO4 center dot(-) in the initiation process, which indicates that the indirect influence of SO4 center dot(-) are more significant in the degradation processes of ATQ and 1-hATQ. This study provides theoretical confirmations for the mechanisms of reactions of ANT with SO4 center dot(-) and center dot OH, and evaluates the importance of SO4 center dot(-) and center dot OH according to the reaction rates. The work can give more insight into the degradation of PAHs by radicals.

The development of mild and efficient processes for the selective oxygenation of organic compounds by molecular oxygen (O-2) is key for the synthesis of oxygenates. This paper discloses an atom-efficient synthesis protocol for the photo-oxygenation of 9,10-dihydroanthracene (DHA) by O-2 to anthraquinone (AQ), which could achieve quantitative AQ yield (100 %) without any extra catalysts or additives under ambient temperature and pressure. A yield of 86.4 % AQ was obtained even in an air atmosphere. Furthermore, this protocol showed good compatibility for the photo-oxidation of several other compounds with similar structures to DHA. From a series of control experiments, free-radical quenching, and electron paramagnetic resonance spin-trapping results, the photo-oxygenation of DHA was probably initiated by its photoexcited state DHA*, and the latter could activate O-2 to a superoxide anion radical (O-2(.-)) through the transfer of its electron. Subsequently, this photo-oxidation was gradually dominated by the oxygenated product AQ as an active photocatalyst obtained from the oxidation of DHA by O-2(.-), and was accelerated with the rapid accumulation of AQ. The present photo-oxidation protocol is a good example of selective oxygenation based on the photoexcited substrate self-activated O-2, which complies well with green chemistry ideals.

Anthrone tautomerized predominantly, under the reaction conditions, into anthrol and involved in the azo coupling reaction with aryl diazonium chloride to give the corresponding azo dye. UV-Vis experiments have supported the tautomerization of anthrone and the presence of the azo dye products in the hydrazone form. Aryl amines with broad biological applications have been involved to increase the utility of the obtained products. Preliminary antibacterial activity resulted in compounds7a,dwhich showed the lowest MIC values of 0.2 and 0.1 x 10(-3) mu g/mL againstEnterococcus feacalisandEscherichia coli, respectively. 10,10-Bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)-3-methylphenyl]-9(10H)-anthrone, as a new aromatic diamine, was synthesized from 9(10H)-anthrone by three-step procedure. Low-temperature polycondensation of this diamine with various aromatic dicarboxylic acid dichlorides produced a series of new cardo poly(ether amide)s with moderate to high inherent viscosities of 0.86-1.43 dL g(-1)while the weight-average and number-average molecular weights were in the range of 48,600-59,800 and 29,800-35,600 g mol(-1), respectively. All the polymers were readily soluble in polar solvents such asN,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc),N,N-dimethylformamide,N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone, dimethyl sulfoxide, and pyridine, and afforded transparent, flexible, and strong films upon casting from DMAc solvent. These polymers had glass transition temperatures of 254-297 degrees C, 10% weight loss temperatures of 493-505 degrees C, and char yields of 61-64% at 800 degrees C in nitrogen. All polymers were amorphous and their films exhibited tensile strength of 80.7-101.4 MPa, elongation at break of 8.0-12.8%, and tensile modulus of 1.9-2.6 GPa. These polymers had low moisture uptake in the range of 2.13-4.02% and high transparency with an ultraviolet-visible absorption cutoff wavelength in the 322-375 nm range.

A set of novel Kv7.2/7.3 (KCNQ2/3) channel blockers was synthesized to address several liabilities of the known compounds XE991 (metabolic instability and CYP inhibition) and the clinical compound DMP 543 (acid instability, insolubility, and lipophilicity). Using the anthrone scaffold of the prior channel blockers, alternative heteroarylmethyl substituents were installed via enolate alkylation reactions. Incorporation of a pyridazine and a fluorinated pyridine gave an analog (compound 18, JDP-107) with a promising combination of potency (IC50=0.16 mu M in a Kv7.2 thallium flux assay), efficacy in a Kv7.2/7.3 patch clamp assay, and drug-like properties.

Lymphomas (cancers of the lymphatic system) account for 12% of malignant diseases worldwide. Burkitt’s lymphoma (BL) is a rare form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in which the cancer starts in the immune B-cells. We report the synthesis and preliminary studies on the antiproliferative activity of a library of 9,10-dihydro-9,10-ethanoanthracene based compounds structurally related to the antidepressant drug maprotiline against BL cell lines MUTU-1 and DG-75. Structural modifications were achieved by Diels-Alder reaction of the core 9-(2-nitrovinyl)anthracene with number of dienophiles including maleic anhydride, maleimides, acrylonitrile and benzyne. The antiproliferative activity of these compounds was evaluated in BL cell lines EBV- MUTU-1 and EBV+ DG-75 (chemoresistant). The most potent compounds 13j, 15, 16a, 16b, 16c, 16d and 19a displayed IC50 values in the range 0.17-0.38 mu M against the BL cell line EBV- MUTU-1 and IC50 values in the range 0.45-0.78 mu M against the chemoresistant BL cell line EBV+ DG-75. Compounds 15, 16b and 16c demonstrated potent ROS dependent apoptotic effects on the BL cell lines which were superior to the control drug taxol and showed minimal cytotoxicity to peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). The results suggest that this class of compounds merits further investigation as antiproliferative agents for BL.

The polysaccharide of yam was extracted by hot water method and purified by column chromatography. The physicochemical properties of Chinese yam polysaccharide were analyzed by UV, IR, GPC, 1D-NMR and 2D-NMR spectra. The results showed that Chinese yam polysaccharide had alpha-D-Gluc-(1 -> 4) glycoside bond, and the C2 hydroxyl group was replaced by ethoxyl group. The average molecular weight was determined to be 7.28 x 104. It showed that The scavenging effect of yam polysaccharide on hydroxyl radicals was similar to VC. The sulfated polysaccharide (S-P), phosphorylated polysaccharide (P-P), carboxymethylated polysaccharide (C-P) and acetylated polysaccharide (A-P) were identified by IR and NMR. The results showed that P and its derivatives showed good antioxidant activity. Especially, their scavenging ability to hydroxyl radicals reached the level of VC. This laid a theoretical foundation for the development of yam polysaccharide-related foods.
