Lymphomas (cancers of the lymphatic system) account for 12% of malignant diseases worldwide. Burkitt’s lymphoma (BL) is a rare form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in which the cancer starts in the immune B-cells. We report the synthesis and preliminary studies on the antiproliferative activity of a library of 9,10-dihydro-9,10-ethanoanthracene based compounds structurally related to the antidepressant drug maprotiline against BL cell lines MUTU-1 and DG-75. Structural modifications were achieved by Diels-Alder reaction of the core 9-(2-nitrovinyl)anthracene with number of dienophiles including maleic anhydride, maleimides, acrylonitrile and benzyne. The antiproliferative activity of these compounds was evaluated in BL cell lines EBV- MUTU-1 and EBV+ DG-75 (chemoresistant). The most potent compounds 13j, 15, 16a, 16b, 16c, 16d and 19a displayed IC50 values in the range 0.17-0.38 mu M against the BL cell line EBV- MUTU-1 and IC50 values in the range 0.45-0.78 mu M against the chemoresistant BL cell line EBV+ DG-75. Compounds 15, 16b and 16c demonstrated potent ROS dependent apoptotic effects on the BL cell lines which were superior to the control drug taxol and showed minimal cytotoxicity to peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). The results suggest that this class of compounds merits further investigation as antiproliferative agents for BL.

Objective: To assess the antidiabetic effect of Opuntia dillenii seed oil on rats with diabetes mellitus. Methods: A rat diabetes model was established by intraperitoneal injection of rats with 50 mg/kg streptozotocin. Thirty albino Wistar rats were divided into five groups: the diabetic control group and normal control group were treated only with distilled water, two diabetic groups received 1 and 2 mL/kg of oil per day, respectively, for 30 days and one diabetic group received 2 mg/kg of glibenclamide. In addition, blood glucose was determined weekly. Body weight, average daily food, water intake and urinary volume of each animal were determined before and after the treatment period. After the treatment period, hepatic glycogen was determined using the anthrone reagent, and glycosuria, total cholesterol, triglycerides, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, urea, creatinine and uric acid were estimated using common clinical diagnostic kits. Results: Oral intake of the oil at 1 and 2 mL/kg for the diabetic animals significantly diminished blood glucose, glycosuria, total cholesterol, triglycerides, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, urea, creatinine and uric acid, accompanied by a noticeable elevation in the amount of hepatic glycogen in comparison with the diabetic control group. Similarly, Opuntia dillenii seed oil significantly increased the food intake and decreased the urinary volume per day in treated rats of the same groups in comparison with the period before the treatment intervention and attenuated body weight loss in the diabetic rats. Moreover, this effect of the oil was dose dependent. On the other hand, the oil did not affect their need for water. Conclusions: The results show that Opuntia dillenii seed oil has a very important antidiabetic effect on streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Hence, we suggest it as a preventive control of diabetes mellitus.

WRKY transcription factors participate in the salt stress responses of various plant species, but the underlying functional mechanisms are not well understood, particularly in grape. In this study, the role of VvWRKY13 in the salt stress response was characterized and the underlying physiological and molecular mechanisms were explored. The results show that VvWRKY13 expression was induced by salt stress, and the VvWRKY13 transcript level in the salt stress-sensitive cultivar was significantly higher than that in the resistant cultivars. Overexpression of VvWRKY13 in Arabidopsis significantly inhibited the growth of transgenic plants under salt stress, indicating that VvWRKY13 has a negative effect on the salt stress response. The photosynthetic rate, contents of proline and soluble sugars, activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), as well as transcriptional levels of proline and soluble sugar metabolic genes, such as P5CS1, SS1, SS2 and G6PDH, as well as SOD and CAT encoding genes CAT1, CAT2, and Cu/Zn-SOD, all decreased under salt stress, whereas hydrogen peroxide and oxygen-free radical contents increased in transgenic Arabidopsis plants compared with those of wild-type plants. VvWRKY13 suppressed upregulation of SnRK2.3, ABF1, ABF2, ABF3, RD29B, RD29A, and RAB18 induced by salt stress, but showed no significant effect on the transcript levels of SnRK2.2, SnRK2.6, or RD22, indicating that VvWRKY13 affects salt stress tolerance via a specific abscisic acid signaling pathway. Key message VvWRKY13, isolated from grapevine, negatively regulate salt stress tolerance by depressing photosynthetic capacity, inhibiting salt-induced accumulation of osmolytes andup-regulation in antioxidant activity as well as expression of related genes. VvWRKY13 may affects salt stress tolerance by specific ABA signalling.

Chiral hyperbranched polymers (HBP) containing cinchona alkaloids were synthesized using a Mizoroki-Heck (MH) coupling polymerization reaction between a cinchona squaramide dimer and tri- or tetrasubstituted aromatic iodides. This is a new type of polymeric chiral organocatalyst. We found that the as-obtained chiral HBPs show excellent catalytic activity in the asymmetric Michael reaction. Almost perfect enantioselectivity (>99% ee) was achieved in the reaction of beta-ketoester and trans-beta-nitrostyrene. The three-dimensional network structure of the chiral HBPs is structurally robust and can be reused for further reaction without any loss in their catalytic activity. (C) 2019 Elsevier Inc. The development of mild and efficient processes for the selective oxygenation of organic compounds by molecular oxygen (O-2) is key for the synthesis of oxygenates. This paper discloses an atom-efficient synthesis protocol for the photo-oxygenation of 9,10-dihydroanthracene (DHA) by O-2 to anthraquinone (AQ), which could achieve quantitative AQ yield (100 %) without any extra catalysts or additives under ambient temperature and pressure. A yield of 86.4 % AQ was obtained even in an air atmosphere. Furthermore, this protocol showed good compatibility for the photo-oxidation of several other compounds with similar structures to DHA. From a series of control experiments, free-radical quenching, and electron paramagnetic resonance spin-trapping results, the photo-oxygenation of DHA was probably initiated by its photoexcited state DHA*, and the latter could activate O-2 to a superoxide anion radical (O-2(.-)) through the transfer of its electron. Subsequently, this photo-oxidation was gradually dominated by the oxygenated product AQ as an active photocatalyst obtained from the oxidation of DHA by O-2(.-), and was accelerated with the rapid accumulation of AQ. The present photo-oxidation protocol is a good example of selective oxygenation based on the photoexcited substrate self-activated O-2, which complies well with green chemistry ideals.

Laccases produced by Leucoagaricus gongylophorus act in lignocellulose degradation and detoxification processes. Therefore, the use of L. gongylophorus laccase (Lac1Lg) was proposed in this work for degradation of anthracene and others polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons without the use of mediators. Degradation reactions were performed in buffer aqueous solution with 10 ppm of anthracene and other PAHs, Tween-20 in 0.25% v/v and a laccase preparation of 50 U. The optimum condition (pH 6.0 and 30 degrees C) was determined by response surface methodology with an excellent coefficient of determination (R-2) of 0.97 and an adjusted coefficient of determination (R-adj(2)) of 0.93. In addition, the employment of the mediator ABTS decreased the anthracene biodegradation from 44 +/- 1% to 30 +/- 1%. This optimum pH of 6.0 suggests that the reaction occurs by a hydrogen atom transfer mechanism. Additionally, in 24 h Lac1Lg biodegraded 72 +/- 1% anthracene, 40 +/- 3% fluorene and 25 +/- 3% phenanthrene. The yellow laccase from L. gongylophorus biodegraded anthracene and produced anthrone and anthraquinone, which are interesting compounds for industrial applications. Moreover, this enzyme also biodegraded the PAHs phenanthrene and fluorene justifying the study of Lac1Lg for bioremediation of these compounds in the environment.

Using green chemical method a series of fifteen systematically substituted 3-(9-substituted anthracen-10-yl)-1-(4-phenyl substituted)prop-2-en-1-one derivatives having high nonlinear absorption coefficient have been synthesized. The nonlinear absorption properties of these compounds were studied using nanosecond pulses at 532 nm wavelength. All 15 derivatives are found to show high nonlinear absorption in the range of 35-640 cm/GW. Among these the derivatives with-NO2 as one of the substitution group show higher nonlinear absorption. The origin of high nonlinear absorption with low linear absorption in the compounds has been attributed to two-step two-photon absorption process. We have shown that the energy bands of these compounds are distributed such that for excitation at 532 nm they have strong nonlinear absorption. These properties of the reported compounds make them a potential candidate for biological imaging and other applications which are based on nonlinear absorption. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are mutagenic and carcinogenic. 16 PAHs as priority pollutants listed by the US Environmental Protection Agency were usually monitored. Therefore, multiple potentially toxic polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) are not monitored. In this study, atmospheric particulate matter samples from Beijing were analyzed using atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI) Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-time-of-flight (GC x GC-TOF) mass spectrometry. The FT-ICR data detected high molecular weight PAHs, alkylated PAHs (APAHs) and heteroatom PAHs. The GC x GC-TOF data tentatively identified 386 PACs in five categories of identification confidence. Twenty-one spectra in the unknown class were manually resolved. Eighty-two PACs with high identification confidence were proposed for further research. The identities of five PAHs and five APAHs that are currently not regulated were confirmed using available standards and quantified in some samples. Some of these PACs, such as dibenzo[a,e]pyrene (C22H14) and 1-methylpyrene (C17H12), should be of concern because of their contamination levels and the high toxicities of themselves and/or their derivatives. This study highlights the possibility of expanding the traditional lists of PAHs to improve pollution control and risk assessment accuracy.

A new aromatic diamine, 10,10-bis [4-(4-amino-2-pyridinoxy)phenyl]-9(10H)-anthracenone (BAPPA) was synthesized from anthrone as the starting material, and the corresponding pyridine- and anthrone-containing poly(ether amide)s (PEAs) were prepared from BAPPA with various aromatic diacid chlorides via a low-temperature solution polycondensation. The resulting PEAs having number-average molecular weights (M-n) of 29,500-33,400 g/mol with the polydispersity index ranged from 1.75 to 1.84, were all amorphous, and displayed excellent thermal stability with the glass transition temperatures of 263-355 degrees C, the temperatures of 415-441 degrees C at 5% weight loss and the higher than 50% residues at 800 degrees C in nitrogen. These new PEAs were soluble in polar solvents such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, N,N-dimethylacetamide and pyridine, even almost in tetrahydrofuran at room temperature and could form transparent, strong and flexible films with tensile strengths of 84-97 MPa, tensile moduli of 2.1-3.2 GPa and elongations at break of 4-13%. Also, the present PEAs exhibited high optical transparence with the UV cutoff wavelength in the 342-362 nm range, and 83-90% transmittance at 500 nm. These results indicated the introduction of anthrone and pyridine groups into the backbone could improve the solubility and transparence of polyamides.
